Chinese Festival Hat
These traditional hats were sewn and embroidered by grandmothers and mothers for children to wear at festivals and other special occasions. The tigers (and dragons, rabbits, bats, and other animals) depicted were believed to bestow the child with strength and power, as well as to frighten away evil spirits. This hat depicts a tiger or other animal with a bird perched on its head. Lining likely dates it to the 40s or 50s. Vintage and in vintage condition-natural wear includes fading on the silk back and a heavily worn left eye-please see third photograph.
